India Adds Villages As Uninhabited Count Declines

India's village map changed little over the decade: total villages edged up from 639,000 in 2001 to 641,000 in 2011. That modest gain came as inhabited villages rose to 598,000, even while uninhabited villages slipped from 45,000 to 43,000 nationwide.

The Census of India, 2011 is the decennial population enumeration conducted by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India. It is the most recent completed census and serves as the primary demographic reference for India. It covers every household across all States and Union Territories.
