India's Town Count Rises 54 Percent in One Decade

India added 2,772 towns between 2001 and 2011, taking the national count from 5,161 to 7,933. That is a 54 percent rise in one decade, leaving the country with about 1.5 times as many towns as it had at the start of the period and pushing the total close to 8,000.

The Census of India, 2011 is the decennial population enumeration conducted by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India. It is the most recent completed census and serves as the primary demographic reference for India. It covers every household across all States and Union Territories.
