India Tobacco Use Falls, But Gender Gap Persists

In India, current tobacco use fell from 34% in 2005 to 23% in 2019, cutting overall prevalence by about a third. Men still used tobacco far more than women, at 38% versus 8.9% in 2019. Rural prevalence was 26%, comfortably above the urban level of 17%.
