22% of India's Primary Care Physician Posts Are Vacant

India's primary care system had 9,354 vacant physician posts against 41,931 sanctioned in 2023, a vacancy rate of 22%. In-position numbers rose from 20,308 in 2005 to 32,901 in 2023, but sanctioned posts grew faster, leaving persistent gaps in rural and remote postings.
