India's Forest Cover Has Grown by 74,000 sq km Since 1987

India's forest cover grew from 6.41 lakh sq km in 1987 to 7.15 lakh sq km in 2023, a net gain of 74,000 sq km. Growth has been slow and includes plantations and agroforestry, not just natural regrowth. Madhya Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Maharashtra hold the largest shares.
